I want to get a cell phone for Todd....like today...before he leaves for his grandpa's. So I go to the Cingular store, thinking I'll get an "add another line for $9.99", bare-bones kind of plan, since I don't think he'll talk on it much.....
It's gonna double my bill every month!
Another option is to go with that new pre-pay plan....but of course I don't think there's any real way to compare costs (they do it that way on purpose...making it all so confusing that you don't really know what you're paying until you get the bill!!).....
So, I'm wondering, how do I get the best deal on cell phone service? Will it be any different if I go somewhere else?

I don't know the way Cingular has it, but the way US Cellular has it is you have a main plan with all the minutes and then you pay more for each phone that you add to the account. Each phone will all pull from the minutes of that main plan.
So, theoretically, you should be able to add a new phone without it doubling your bill. They might do something different, though.
I just ordered a tracphone for myself, since I've been surviving on IM, email, and landlines I shouldn't need a cell phone for too much (probably famous last words) but I got a half way decent prepaid phone through Tracphone with 300 mins and service for a year for about $140. plus I'll probably get another 200 mins through promotional offers for free. I'll find out how well it works when I get it of course, but my parents have one and it seems to work well for them. I've done a lot of research on cell phones, and for a light user this seems to be the cheapest way to go.
I know we (my family) has cingular and it operates similarly to the way Drew said. But we may also have a different plan than you...
