Did you know that a mother's first milk (collostrum) is actually a laxative for the baby, who needs to pass it's first, thick poop? Formula can't even come close to reproducing this...
Breastfed babies have highter IQs.
A physician in Austrailia did a study where immediately after babies were delivered, they were placed on the mothers' belly, and all on their own, the babies wiggled and squirmed their way up the belly (helping to massage the uterus), found the breast, and latched on all by themselves!
Immediately after birth, a mother's breasts prodouce a pharamone that smells like amniotic fluid, so the baby knows exactly where to go
The make-up of a mother's milk changes mid-feeding to provide more fat as the feeding goes on....formula can't reproduce this benefit
Breastmilk provides all the nutrition a baby requires for the the first year of life - no cereal, fruits, vegetables, etc. are needed
In another case, a baby in a Neonatal ICU had a strange virus. Doctors were concerned about the other babies contracting the virus, so they tested them all to see if it had spread. They found that the breastfed babies in the NICU had an antibody in their system already - - this means that the mothers' bodies had somehow sensed the danger, and had produced antibodies in their milk to protect the babies!
It's so cool to be able to help moms make good choices for their babies...but more than that....just to see what an amazing Creator we have!

Congrats on the new job Gretch! Weird though...I was just talking about all this amazing, God-created, breastfeeding stuff with Danielle (a new mom here at the CGO!). Way to encourage using your job!
Also, cheers to you for the crowd of CSFer's this semester. I'm so excited to hear what God will do this year!
thanks, heather....I think the lack of responses to my breastfeeding blog confirmed my other fear....that I'll become one of those women who make everyone feel uncomfortable by talking about it and doing it in public and nursing their kids till they're 7 years old....I'm not there yet, so intervene if you see me getting out of control!
