About 4 days ago, I noticed a strange smell in our house. My husband teases me for having the super-power of super-smell, so I kept my suspicions to myself at first. I worried that maybe we had a gas leak - after running the gas fireplace for 3 days all day long, I thought maybe that could be the culprit....but then it began to smell more like a sewer smell...ew.....
Did a little research on the internet about sewer smells in the house and had nightmares of plumbers and digging up the basement floor and replacing old pipes....we flushed the basement drain and hoped that would work.
When finally Todd noticed the smell, I knew it was bad. Sarah Jane joined us in the basement to try to track down the source of the smell. We had just about settled on calling CILCO about a gas leak, when SJ pinpointed the smell to one area of the basement. And as i scanned the shelving near our deep freezer, I noticed a white package conspicuously out of place.....
meat.
rancid, rotting meat.
about a week ago I had been re-arranging the food in the freezer so I'd know what was actually in there, and apparently, I set a pork roast out on the shelf while I moved things around.
dis. gust. ing.
but this evening, my house smells much better!

yeah for SJ's inherited super-nose!
Man, good thing you found it! I hate random smells in the house...especially when you don't find an obvious source!!
At least you found it before you paid someone to come check things out!
Laura
Right after I purchase my AWESOME vacuum sealer, I spent all day playing with it (marshmallows are SO fun to vacuum seal). So, about a year ago, I was getting ready to do some holiday baking and was doing inventory in my pantry. I pulled out a baggie of nicely vacuum-sealed "crushed oreos". I flipped the package over to read "Browned hamburger" - it was dated about 3 years earlier. Yes, I had thrown a pack of browned hamburger meat in the pantry and it had shriveled up into what looked exactly like crushed oreos. I'm just really thankful that the seal held enough to keep it from smelling!
Glad you found it and that it wasn't a dead rodent lurking in the corner!
Jill,
Ewwwww.....nice testimonial for the vacuum sealer, though!!
ah funny!! I have a crazy super smeller nose, too- it drives my husband crazy!
Haha- we had the same thing that happened at our house! I kept smelling something and my parents said they didn't know what I was talking about. It was (now defrosted) chicken on a table in the basement by the freezer. Yay for super sniffers!
