I'm also a control freak.
Somehow, knowing more information makes me feel more in control of things. However, I'm pretty sure that knowing who's going where and what the latest books/shows/celebrities are all about isn't going to make me more valuable to God - - it's just going to keep me distracted enough to not hear Him.
So for Lent, I'll be unplugging from facebook, reading blogs, and twitter. I'd love to chat on the phone or communicate through email, but I won't be lurking in blog-world for a few weeks.
Our family is also going to be reading through the Gospels together - - some of our students did this a while back, but it wasn't the right time for our family. Biblegateway.com has just the right Bible reading plan for Lent if you wanna check it out!
I'd love to hear how your family is preparing for Easter - - if you're giving something up, or adding something new, share and we can all cheer one another on as we look towards the resurrection!

Good luck. I feel like there are days that I need to unplug too. Maybe not for the whole season of Lent, but I've been making myself read before I go to bed. I feel like it brings some balance to the end of the day.
i'm supportive 100%, really, i am. but what i'm hearing you say is you've decided to not be in contact with me for a month. so you will email us right? let us know all of the wonderful things happening in your house? maybe sarah jane can still facebook? or no? because jonathan and i were just saying the other day how being here is so much easier than africa because we have good internet and still feel connected to our family and i kind of don't want to give that up. i like you guys.
gotshoo...I agree...ending the day with reading does seem to put a good end-cap on things!
Amanda....I had this mental debate, as well. I may still be updating my blog - partly for you and others who want to know about what's going on in our family, and also because it's kind of a journal for me. I won't however, be checking other blogs.
Terrific idea, Gretchen! You will be blessed!
