Our children LOVE to go to campus and play with the students, and after doing this for 16 years, they know they can expect lots of attention AND lots of CANDY and other free stuff. I was talking to some new friends today when Selah joined us:
Me: And this is our youngest daughter, Selah
Selah: I'm adopted.
Me:
Selah: Na-uh.
Not sure what that's all about, but seconds later she ran off to play with some other kids who were there...
Awkward.
**Edit: for those of you who haven't adopted older children, we're fine. Really. Selah loves being in our family and we're attaching nicely....but there are still times when she's very aware of the skin color differences. Later that night I asked her about this encounter, and I think she was self-conscious about the fact that people might be wondering why we don't look alike. The little dig about not being my daughter, there at the end....that one was just because she's learned how to make me squirm :)

I wish I could've been there.
I can't wait to get the Living Word Ministries/Living WordFellowship Churchtelevision ministries finally off the groun. I'd like to be able to help spread the good news of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, fully going so that people who ca...n't get to church can have church every week. You can find us, in the Springfield area, on Access Channel 4 at 11AM, 5PM, and 11PM every Sunday. Keep watching for new broadcasts.
Don't you love those really strange looks people give you when your true status with the whole adoption, attachment slide shines through?? We still have days where it is obvious (not just from her looks) that Ellie is a recent adoptee. I just have to keep reminding myself that it's a slow process, everyone else who has adopted (at least older children)
has gone through the same thing.
But I'm the parent and I have to react positively even when I DON"T want to!!!
There are times when bio children want to deny their parents are who they are ;)...at least I can remember being that way. I think it just stings a lot more because of all the work that goes into attachment/becoming a family.
thanks for sharing....i need these insights ;)
awww.. I bet it is tough for her.. but man.. I can see how happy she is with you guys.. no matter what you encounter as a family.. I know that it will never outweigh the positive.
