Breastfeeding as a spiritual matter?

My thoughtful husband forwarded this Christianity Today article about breastfeeding to me today, and it got me thinking...

Some people get uncomfortable when I tell them I'm a Lactation Counselor. Now, I don't just whip that little bit of info out first thing, but it doesn't take long in a conversation for someone to ask, "what do you do?".

I love breastfeeding.

Does that sound weird? Maybe. But every time I talk to a young woman about how her body immunizes her baby through the first drops of breast milk, or the way her breast looks like a bulls-eye to a baby whose vision isn't quite focused, or how a mother's milk will mysteriously develop whatever antibodies are needed to protect the baby from danger....with every conversation, I am continually amazed at the Creator God.

So yes, breastfeeding is best for babies. It's best for mommies, for the environment, maybe even for the economy. But another benefit of breastfeeding is that it points us to the amazing Creator. And I love getting to connect those dots for the clients I work with!

It is such a beautiful wonderful thing! I am soooo thankful for an amazing LC that helped when Shira was born - and I then went on to successfully nurse each of my 4 for over a year each! I'm so glad you do what you do! :)
