You Better Watch Out!

When Selah came, she had no idea who Santa was.

The first Christmas song her 1st grade class learned this year was "Santa Claus is Coming to Town", which has ended up being a little traumatic. More than once, she's asked me if Santa really knows everything she does, and if she'll get coal in her stocking.

Last night I sent Selah to her room for 10 minutes to think about how she could be kinder to her sister. She stomped up the stairs, but her frustration with me quickly became something more as I heard her wailing and sobbing from her room. Strange, I thought. It was a little painful to hear, actually, and I wondered if she was experiencing a wave of grief, mourning her family in Ethiopia. I scooped her up in my arms and rubbed her back and told her she was safe, and it was okay.....and through her hyperventilating and sobbing she said, "I made a big mistake....Santa's not going to bring me presents!!"

I'm beginning to think this Santa business is nothing but trouble.....
