vulnerable

Selah is home with a fever today.

Funny how feeling pitiful and helpless makes it easier for her to let me love her. Tough, know-it-all defenses are down, and we can snuggle and read and giggle together, the way mother and daughter should. No battles for control. No challenging of authority. I don't feel exhausted. She doesn't feel frustrated.

Why can't we do this every day?

And why does every Selah-Gretchen story teach me so much about the Gretchen-God story?
