The Green Smoothie Experiment

Somehow, I missed the part of childhood where you fall in love with vegetables. I have amazing parents who fed us well-balanced meals and didn't start buying sugar cereal and soda until we all left the house (well, except for my little brother, Pete....he got everything)...but it's been a long road to learn to really enjoy eating vegetables.

So, when I ran across this Green Smoothie Challenge on one of the hippie-chick blogs I read and then saw that Elise and the Lasleys were giving it a shot, I dug out the blender and tried it on the family!

The link above will show you a nice little video about how to make the smoothies, but here's the basic premise:

Start with some fresh and frozen fruit in a blender. I usually throw in 1 orange (peeled, but seeds and all), a banana, and about 2 cups of frozen mixed fruit (peaches, pineapple, mango, strawberries). Blend with about 1/2 cup of water until nice and smooth. So far, just looks, tastes and smells like a yummy fruit smoothie, right?

Next we add about 3 handfuls of fresh spinach (or romaine or other healthy greens).

Yes. Spinach.

Blend until totally smooth and some shade of green.

My family was skeptical.

My husband asked if we could do everything BUT the spinach (he also asks that I eliminate onions from every recipe).

But we LOVE them!!

We did Green Smoothies for breakfast for about 5 days in a row. One of those days I asked if they'd like pancakes instead, and the girls chose the smoothies!

It does something to my brain to know that I started my morning off with such a healthy drink -- we were walking and biking more last week, and I think it's because I had a healthy mindset. It can backfire, however. I have also had days where I thought "psshh....I had spinach for breakfast....I can eat whatever I want for the rest of the day!"

We're back from vacation and ready to start our green smoothie routine again....this morning with my $.99 cent pineapple from Aldi....Mmmmmm......

I'm willing to try it out. Rob is skeptical. I'm wondering how we could fit this in w/our camp schedule.
