It was Christmas at our house today! We received all sort of Amharic language-learning tools - children's songs, a children's tv show in Amharic, and a language cd made specifically for adoptive families....If you come to our house, ride in our car, listen to our mp3 players, or sit in front of our tv, you're likely to get a taste of our new 2nd language!
Oh, and if that wasn't good enough, we got a Neue Ministry kit in the mail - - new books, cds, dvd, magazines.....including Crazy Love, Shane Claiborne, Rob Bell, Hillsong, Desperation Band, and lots more!!

Names, names, names.....remember how I said I get paralyzed by big decisions?! Try naming a child who already has a name (but not one that's easily pronounceable by most of American society)!! I'm getting lots of good advice on name options, letting Peanut be a part of the naming process, and just taking it slow....so Peanut may be what we stick with until we actually get to talk to our Ethiopian Princess....princess peanut....hmmmmm
This weekend we're putting together a photo album and first letter to Peanut - - there's some pressure - - what would you want to know if you were being adopted by a strange (that's an understatement) white family half-way around the world?

I would want to see pictures of you, your house, your extended family. I would want to know that my new sisters are excited about me coming home and they are close enough in ages to be my friends. I would want to know that my parents love me more than they thought it was possible to love another human being.
Gretchen -- I already know this about you guys. Just let Peanut know. Don't worry, you cannot mess this up. Just take a deep breathe and pour out your love for her.
We sent photo albums to the kids and we included pictures of our neighborhood, our house, their bedrooms, the main living areas, the pets, places we frequent around the island (beaches), etc....
In the letter we sent we included information about us (what we do for a living), told them that we have no other kids, we have pets, etc....We also informed them that they each have their own bedrooms and we know what school they'll be going to next year. I also told them we're learning Amharic and that we're going to be there as soon as we can be.

I think Peanut is just perfect for now. You'll know what to name her when the time is right. How exciting that she'll get to see photos of her new family soon! I'm sure it will help so much in the transistion process. Can't wait to hear more about her...
I'd want to know all about the aunt, uncle and cousin they have but will only see every couple of years because they live so far away...
I agree! Chosing a name is terrible!! What if they don't like it? What if it's too trendy, what if it's too old?? I looked through that baby name book 6 times front to back...even the boys names just in case... and still came back to Ellie which was one of very first thoughts.
She is going to love your family and any name that you like.
